Students and opportunities
Help found a field.
HOWPOL will fund two doctoral research assistantships at Western and two advanced undergraduate positions, and will train students in the history of philosophy of language through seminars, research meetings and international events. All positions depend on the funding application.
Doctoral students
Two PhD students in Western’s Philosophy Department will join the project with research assistantships. The first (enrolling September 2027) will ideally be a specialist who wants to work across the history of philosophy of language. The second will come in either as a specialist in contemporary philosophy of language who is interested in connecting it with history, or as a specialist in Early Modern philosophy who is eager to learn about philosophies of language. Admission is through the department’s usual process.
Three roles students rotate through
Research Associate
An annual workshop on historiography and research methods, led by Benjamin Hill, including contextualized reconstruction and digital humanities methods. Full participation in reading and research meetings, literature reviews, collaborative drafting, co-authorship and co-presenting at conferences.
Project Manager
Day-to-day oversight of the project, with professional development training, tutorials on the group’s software, and guidance on research data management.
Web Master
Creating and maintaining the project website, and building a web design portfolio piece in the process.
International exposure and networks
Three of the planned events are outside Canada, in Italy, Japan and Ecuador. Student researchers will co-present, meet researchers from around the globe, and may have the opportunity to spend a term or two at a partner institution.
Undergraduates
Advanced undergraduates will comment on draft chapters of Episodes in the History of Philosophy of Language in a third-year course at Western, reading alongside the corresponding selections from the Sourcebook. At the end of the grant, two advanced Philosophy undergraduates will be hired to help prepare the books and run the closing workshop.
